Like I wrote before, only in high frequency, simple EQ using for the master track works well. It’s often better than tweaking each single track.
But in the middle and low, it’s totally different.
I wrote here about the things to do when you feel your mix muffled and muddy.
In the process of adding tracks, sounds sometimes go indistinct . If the extreme words, it sounds like you are listening the sound in the water.
In that case, the problem might be in the middle and low frequency range. It’s supposed to be about from 100hz to 300hz.
The things to do first is finding the frequency point where makes reason.
So, insert the EQ on the master track, and make the high and narrow bell curve.
And slide it from high Freq to low Freq.
Attention : Now you have to be careful of the volume of your speaker or headphone since this makes too big sounds occasionally.
Then you will find the point where the sounds are saturating. It sounds like oscillating itself and it’s harsher than elsewhere.
Here is mostly the point where has the problem.
Note the frequency number here.
Next oppositely, make the sharp inverted bell curve and slide it from high to low. This time you will see the point you feel drastically opened more than else. Here is also where make the problem.
Frequently these two points would be same.
If it’s different, the problem would be one or both of them.
Too many sounds are gathering there, or single track sound too much on there.
Next, check the every single track by your ears and analyzer.
And you would find the track(s) which have much amount on that frequency. So adjust them by EQ.
If some tracks come under, both tracks might be subtracted or only one track might. So you have to find the best decision by trying various combinations.
In many cases, the instrument on these tracks will be the guitar, keys, synths or snare. But sometimes low frequency of hi-hat or upper of the bass will be the reason unexpectedly.
After doing this, the sounds will change open like the fog has lifted. So I sometimes do too much. We have to be careful of not losing essential element on the sound by A/B test and on/off the plugin.
