No watching display in DAW composing helps your appropriate decision.

投稿日:Friday April 28th, 2017 更新日:

Of course, everyone who makes music by DAW in the computer are supposed to watch the display while making.
Today I write the amazing effect of avoiding to watch the display.

Human is depending on the sense of vision than we expected.

Then I sometimes even feel it’s seems like not making music by my ears but by my eyes.

That’s nothing new.
Even in the old days when there were only piano and music sheet as the tool for composing, the composers were suffering from the strong visual effect that key of the piano and the notes on the music sheet would make.

Even it’s more now a days.

This sound has to be small since the meter rise only little.
This sound has to be compressed so much since the threshold is located very near the bottom.

Like this you can expect many things without listening the sounds.

In the result, sometimes we notice the bassdrum is too strong, after bouncing an audio file and listening it from your iPod.
Sorry, this is an extreme case, but the small mistakes are caused by operation depending on visual information.

That’s why reducing to see the DAW is an important factor to develop composing and mixing quality.

In this matter, there are many of the method.

Today I introduce 2 of them.

1, Turn off the Display

Is it too straightforward? But the effect is huge.
Especially for dance music creator.
So you check the groove or dancelike while turning off the display.

Why is this so effective?

Because only if we see the midi and audio data going through from right to left, we a have strong impression as if the songs are going on.

Or only if we see many knobs and sliders on the plugin synths, it looks like having enough amount of information on that song.

Then turn off the display.
Or open the internet browser ahead of DAW.

So, you can know whether the song really is going on or not.

2, Blind test

The blind test goes well with A/B test I wrote in another post.
In short, not looking the meters, knobs and sliders when you compare settingA with settingB.

Further say, in comparing, you should make the situation that you cannot know whether A or B currently.

For instance, now you are bout to compare the 2 setting.
Which is better…?

In this case, Waves Plugins changes 2 stats (A and B) with your pushing “Setup A” button.

You are suppose to repeated pushing this button to decide the better one.

Run through.

1.Make 2 setting to compare with each other.
2.Change A/B several times with seeing the plugin.
3.Close your eyes.
4.Don’t move the mouse or pointer. And change the A/B randomly while closing your eyes.
5.Now you cannot tell which is which?
6.Here, you make a decision with changing A and B without Looking.

No matter how amount, meters and knobs of plugin make a big impression from visual side.

And of course, the listeners or the Audiences won’t see the meters.

This method helps so much for DAW composing and mixing.

Also, you will be able to recognize many information which you couldn’t catch.

Conception from Chance Operation, “iTunes composition method”

Experimental music and ambient music people will know the chance operation. The iTunes composition method is developed (by me) as a way of making of ideas in normal composition. Sponsored Links First of all, about chance operation. Also known as, chance music or aleatoric music. This is the current of contemporary music developed by John Cage, is the thinking way that composition positively includes the elements which happen by chance. Of course, although I think I can write the long article about this, but today I want to write about the more general composition method which is oriented by chance …

A/B test eliminates waste of your mixing time

When you are tweaking the synths, EQ or compressor, in music making quite important thing is A/B testing. Sponsored Links A/B test is the working method which is always going while comparing between the current status and before status. There is a Kick drum here. You use EQ then put compressor. And you could make a super cool heavy Kick. Then you would be happy about it then. However, as your work progress, you start to feel dissatisfaction about your Kick. Then you make the sound of Kick again, and you notice that the elementary sound of Kick is much …

My way of using AI mastering service “LANDR”

LANDR is an auto mastering service by AI. I would write my own strange way of using it. Firstly, LANDR is an innovative service which offers you to mastering your tracks by AI and deep learning system. Although I registered 2 years ago (Mar.2015), I have left it until recently. Because I didn’t have a good impression at that time after using a few times. Sponsored Links But the time has passed since then, Now many musicians seem to affirm it. Recently I also use it frequently. Although of course, some type of music is cut out for but others are not, but sometimes I really surprised at …

The way to avoid your mix sounds muffled.

Like I wrote before, only in high frequency, simple EQ using for the master track works well. It’s often better than tweaking each single track. But in the middle and low, it’s totally different. Sponsored Links I wrote here about the things to do when you feel your mix muffled and muddy. In the process of adding tracks, sounds sometimes go indistinct . If the extreme words, it sounds like you are listening the sound in the water. In that case, the problem might be in the middle and low frequency range. It’s supposed to be about from 100hz to 300hz.   …
